Competitions for the 2017/2018 season

Last season (2016/17) the Devon women's representative squad took the step up to the top division (cup competition) of the Gill Burns County Championship.

They proved they were up to the higher standard with good games against Gloucestershire, Surrey and Berkshire.

Devon will again play in the Gill Burns County Championship cup competition in the 2017/18 season, with pool fixtures scheduled against Berkshire, Gloucestershire and Kent.

The county will also be playing a warm-up game on April 15, 2018. Winners of the pool stages will then continue to the semi-finals (see fixtures)

Selection, trials and training

Trials for the county squad will be held on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at Topsham RFC and Sunday, February 11, 2018 at Plymstock Albion Oaks RFC. All women hoping to represent the county must attend at least one, and ideally both, of these trials. Team Manager: Katie Lunnon

Katie is women’s rugby lead within Devon RFU and has completed the RFU leadership academy. She has been running the Devon women's representative team since it was re-established in 2015.

For the past year she has also taken on the role of women’s player development within Devon RFU and sits on both the game development and player development sub committees.

Katie has been living in Devon since 2013 and in 2014 she was involved in setting up the new Topsham ladies' rugby team, where she was club captain for three years until the end of the 2016/17 season when she stepped down as she was expecting a baby.


Head Coach: Greg Richards

Greg joined the Devon women's representative coaching team during the 2016/17 season, as an assistant coach, working primarily with the forwards.

This season Greg will be heading the coaching team, as well as working with the backs. Greg is a level two qualified coach who is working towards his level three qualification.

He has five years’ experience of coaching women’s rugby, having coached Cullompton ladies since the 2013/14 season, who were recently promoted to the Championship South Two league.



Assistant Coach: Mike Richards

Mike has joined the Devon women's representative coaching team this season as a forwards coach.

Mike is a level two qualified coach and referee who has two-and-a-half years’ experience of coaching women’s rugby, having coached Withycombe since their inception. Mike is no stranger to the county game, having represented both Devon and Dorset & Wilts in the county championship, and is currently on the Devon U18 boys coaching staff. He is currently plying his trade as a player with Exmouth in the South West Premier league.


Assistant Coach: Altan Ozdemir (Oz)

Oz has joined the Devon women's representative coaching team this season as a forwards coach. He is an ex-professional rugby player.

He started playing for Bristol in 1994, before moving to Harlequins in 1996 and then onto Bedford in 1999. After a spell with Leeds from 2000 to 2002, he played for Exeter Chiefs until 2005, when he moved to fellow Championship side, Plymouth Albion. Oz works currently as a personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach. Oz has been a forwards/scrum coach at Plymouth Albion RFC, Cullompton RFC and Exmouth RFC.

Assistant Coach: Ed Powell

Ed joined the Devon women's representative coaching team in the 2016/17 season as a fitness coach. This season he will be working as an assistant coach, primarily with the backs.

Ed is a level two qualified coach who also has an Emergency First Aid in Rugby Union (EFARU) qualification.

This is Ed’s third season coaching women’s rugby, after starting coaching Topsham ladies backs for two seasons since 2015/16 season. Ed is also currently the backs coach for Devon U18 boys this season as well.
