ENGLAND women’s international Poppy Leitch was a guest of honour at the South West Summer Youth Games finals on Saturday at Dawlish.

Leitch was joined at the event by her Bristol Ladies and Exeter University team-mates Hollie Cunningham and Clara Nielson, who have both represented England at under-20 level.

The trio were on hand to inspire and offer advice to hundreds of youngsters taking part in popular annual multi-sport event.

Devon RFU are one of the South West Youth Games partners and county officials and coaches were out in force at the finals.

RFU coaches Rob Masters, Mike Lewis, Gary Kingdom and Dom Caton helped organise and referee an under-13 girls’ rugby event. Nearly all the girls taking part were new to rugby.

East Devon entered two sides (red and white), while Torbay, South Hams and Teignbridge also featured in the rugby.

All the players that took part were rewarded with a Devon RFU goodie bag and provided with information on where to continue playing rugby in the future.

Exeter’s Leitch and North Tawton’s Neilson both featured in Youth Games as youngsters and it is hoped that some of the young players on show on Saturday might also go on to enjoy success at senior level.
