Under-20 back Toogood promoted to Devon senior squad for Kent game

YOUNG Ivybridge back Jay Toogood will make his Devon senior debut on Saturday when the team travel to Aylesford to take on Kent in their final County Championship match of the season (3pm).

Toogood, who was part of Devon’s successful under-20 squad, is one of five players who come into the starting line-up following last week’s 20-19 win at Cornwall.

The others are Plymstock Albion Oaks forward Tim Coats, Honiton number eight Harry Wright and Ivybridge centres Matt Grieveson and Billy Pinkus.

Tom McGratton, Wayne Sprangle, Matt Crosscombe, Rhys Palmer and Kyle Browne are unavailable this weekend.

Among the players added to the replacements’ bench are Honiton’s Olly Cave and Withycombe’s Alex Taylor and Glenn Channing.

Devon head to Aylesford boosted by their win over Cornwall at Camborne last Saturday.

That victory has given them a great chance of staying in the top division of county rugby.

However, they still need to win against Kent to be certain of keeping their place in Division One, with relegation done over a two-year period.

Last year the two teams played out a thrilling match at Barnstaple, which Kent, who had been 17-0 down at half-time, narrowly edged 28-20 after scoring two tries in injury-time.
