DEVON’S senior squad will begin their preparations for the County Championship on Monday when they head to St Austell to play Cornwall in the annual Tamar Cup (7.45pm).

Devon have not included any of the under-20 squad that are playing the day before in Monday’s team, but a number are in the training squad for the championship.

The side to play Cornwall is dependent on availability and could change after club games over the weekend.

“All the clubs are very supportive, but you don’t want to press them if they are in a relegation or promotion battle,” said Devon’s representative rugby chairman Jeremy Chugg.

“If teams are in a battle then they are not likely to want their players playing two games in three days and risking injuries.

“But this is a game where we want to look at players and see if they can step up.

“We already know what some can do from last year, previous years and what clubs they play at, so it is important to look at fringe players in this fixture, but with enough experienced players around them. I think we have got a decent balance with enough experienced players to make the game competitive.

“If the young and less experience lads can step up then they will be in the County Championship squad.

“The Tamar Cup is a very competitive game of rugby between two counties who love their rugby.”
