THERE was mixed fortunes for Devon Schools’ Under-16s in their final games of the season against Dorset & Wiltshire at Trowbridge RFC.

The B team played first and after conceding an early try fought back with a spirited and skilful performance to win an exciting encounter 31-28.

Devon trailed 14-10 at half-time with Herbie Owen scoring a drive try from close range and Henry Varndell-Dawes breaking several tackles to score in the corner after a sweeping move.

The visitors gained the upper hand in the second half with tries by Jacob Brooks, Gareth Roebuck and Josh Drew, which were all converted by Gareth Roebuck.  Dorset & Wilts added two second half tries, one coming with the last play of the game.

However, Devon’s A side were unable to finish their season unbeaten and suffered a 45-24 loss to a strong Dorset & Wiltshire side.

Devon managed some enterprising attacking moves but were never able to impose any control on the game and reproduce their form of earlier games in this season’s campaign.

Devon’s A and B sides both only suffered one defeat during the season.

The A team had beaten Cornwall 46-5 at Mount Kelly College, Gloucestershire 24-7 at Keyham and Somerset 20-19 away at Weston.

The B team beat Dorset & Wiltshire 31-28, Cornwall 29-10 and Somerset 7-5. Their only defeat was a narrow 15-10 loss against Gloucestershire.
