Devon RFU were proud to support the South West Youth Games

DEVON RFU were proud to support the South West Youth Games which took place at Okehampton on Sunday.

More than 1,000 youngsters from Devon and Cornwall took part in the multi-sport competition.

The school pupils represented their areas, with Mid-Devon, Teignmouth, East Devon, West Devon, Torbay, Exeter, Plymouth, South Hams, North Devon/Torridge and Cornwall competing against each other.

Rugby was one of the 19 sports on offer at the event, with an under-15 girls’ sevens competition and an under-13 tag event.

Devon rugby development officer Jason Luff attended the games and helped organise the under-15 girls’ competition.

He said: “The Devon Youth Games was a fantastic event, played in smashing conditions and was a glowing advertisement for the game of rugby.

“Girls from Paignton, Newton Abbot, Crediton, Okehampton, Tavistock and Devonport Services all took part in a day of mixed conditioned touch and 7s.

“The standard of play was very high with hard running and tackling in abundance with some quality off-loading also on show.

“The core values in rugby were displayed by all the girls. The young rugby ambassadors did a fantastic job refereeing also.”

The other sports on offer at Okehampton were tennis, athletics, triathlon, football, cricket, netball, gymnastics, dance, badminton, hockey, cyclo-cross, ability games, Street Games, BMX, scootering and skateboarding.

West Devon finished as overall winners on the day.
