Devon Under-20s encouraged by performance against Cornwall

DEVON’S under-20 coaching staff felt there were plenty of positives to take from their opening outing of the season.

The young Green and Whites lost 33-19 to Cornwall at Launceston in a friendly fixture played in four quarters so that both counties could look at different players and structures before their respective championship campaigns get underway in February.

Devon had plenty of territory and possession and dominated the scrums, but Cornwall defended well and took their chances in attack.

Three of the four quarters were even, but it was the third quarter, where the Duchy scored two unanswered tries, which ultimately decided the game.

The home team touched down five times in total, with Devon going over three times.

Devon’s points came from a penalty try and touch downs by Ivybridge’s Damon Akerman and Cardiff University’s Adam Howell, with Ivybridge’s Mitch Pinkus kicking two conversions

Devon, fielding a young side put together late on, were held up over the line on two other occasions and certainly had plenty of opportunities to add to their tally.

Lewis Paterson, who is coaching the team along with Gareth Jones and Roger Hutchinson, felt Sunday’s performance has given Devon some great foundations to build on ahead of their opening County Shield match against Dorset & Wiltshire on February 26,

“We are over the moon with that performance,” said Paterson. “We are as proud as punch for the lads.

“There was so much positivity there and such great foundations for us to build on.

“We were incredibly impressed after one training session and one game. There were a few defensive errors, but, looking forward we could not be more positive.

“Take nothing away from Cornwall, but if you look at territory and possession we were very dominant. It was just a few defensive hiccups and when Cornwall got the ball they capitalised. That was the difference – they finished their scores off.

“We had a lot of the ball, but Cornwall defended very well.

“Would it have been different if it hadn’t been four quarters? Possibly, but the idea was to look at players and lay some foundations going forward.

“We are just happy we have got some building blocks to move forward with.

“What was really good is that there was almost a club atmosphere among the squad. They were all really eager. To have that type of response when they have all just been thrown together is huge.

“There are still opportunities for other players to come in. We are still looking at players. There are still places up for grabs.”
