Devon U15 girls impress at opening South West festival

Devon U15 girls started their campaign away at North Bristol RFC on Sunday with a South West X10s festival.

The tournament saw Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Gloucestershire all field two sides.

Devon took 39 girls split into two squads (Devon Greens and Devon Whites) to compete in six, 12 minutes games against the county counterparts.

With the two Devon teams being split randomly (instead of an old fashioned A and B squad) the girls gelled phenomenally after only one training session together as a squad on Friday at North Tawton.

Devon Greens recorded two wins against Somerset (17-12 and 12-0), two wins against Cornwall (17-0 and 19-0) and then a 5-5 draw and 29-0 loss to a strong Gloucestershire outfit.

The Devon Whites recorded similar results, with two wins against Somerset (7-0 and 5-0), two wins against  Cornwall (7-5 and 10-5) and two losses against Gloucestershire (26-0 and 17-0).

With all the girls playing equal game time across both squads the day was very much a perfect opportunity to gel the squad and for the girls to experience county rugby.

Next week Devon welcome the other counties to Tavistock RFC in a more recognisable 15-a-side festival where Devon will look to field two strong sides before naming a final squad of 23 for a one-off fixture at Truro College the following week against Cornwall where they will look to regain the Tamar Cup.
