DEVON’S women’s team play their only home game of the Gill Burns County Championship on Sunday when they host Essex at Withycombe (1pm).

Devon had a tricky start to their Division Two, Pool Two campaign last week with a tough trip to Hertfordshire.

The Green & Whites made a slow start at Hertford and trailed 21-5 at the break, with prop Enya Surtees getting their only try.

But they improved second half and cut the gap with a fine try by winger Harriet Jeffery after good play by the forwards. Hertfordshire did score a late trip to win 28-10 but Devon will have take heart from their second half display.

Essex also lost their opening game, going down 48-5 at home to Hampshire.

Devon will be hoping for a decent crowd a Withycombe to try to cheer them on to a vital victory.
