Tamar Saracens overwhelmed by response to food bank campaign
WITH no rugby to look forward to at the moment, Tamar Saracens are turning their attentions to trying to help the community.
The Devon One side are using the second national lockdown to collect boxes for the Plymouth Food Bank.
They set an original target of collecting 25 large boxes, but, with the rest of the local rugby community now getting involved, along with football club Elburton Villa, they are on course to more than double that figure and help people ahead of Christmas.
“As a club we try to partake in as many charity events as we can,” said Saracens spokesman Marc Cioffi.
“And we were inspired by what Devonport Services did in the first lockdown with their head shave and how that took off. That showed that you can’t underestimate the power of social media and the rugby community.
“It was Sam Gough’s idea to get some boxes together for the Plymouth Food Bank and as a club we have got behind it.
“We’ve had such a good response. It has really taken off. It has been quite overwhelming. It is nice to see that community spirit – it is heart-warming and restores your faith in people.
“It is nice to see people using their time to help rather than just stewing over the fact that there’s no rugby.”
More and more people have been turning to food banks this year due to the coronavirus pandemic and Saracens want to make sure that everyone in the city can enjoy Christmas.
As well as looking for general toiletries and non-perishable food and drinks, they are also hoping to collect Christmas related items like selection boxes and treats.
“Let's put a smile on someone's face at this tough time,” was the club’s post when they launched the appeal.
People can donate by buying items with their normal shop then contacting Tamar Saracens’ collection service. The club say they are willing to collect any items. Money or Amazon donations can also be made.
