Gosling hopes Devon Under-20s can build on this season
DEVON Under-20 head coach Nathan Gosling hopes the team can come back stronger next season after ending their 2020 County Championship campaign with a defeat at Berkshire on Sunday.
The young Green and Whites were beaten 26-7 at Rams RFC to lose their first match of the campaign.
They had previously beaten Cornwall and drawn away at Gloucestershire to go into the final weekend of group games top of their pool.
But Sunday’s defeat, coupled with Cornwall’s bonus-point victory against Gloucestershire, meant Devon missed out on the quarter-finals.
“It was very disappointing,” said Gosling. “But what we have to take out of it is that we have got that spirit and togetherness back into the boys and there is a real vibrancy around what we are doing.
“I know we lost and it was very disappointing, but that is the way it goes sometimes. You have your dips and you have to learn from them and move on. I’m sure we will come back bigger and stronger next year.”
He added: “We had a good result against Cornwall and we should have beaten Gloucestershire, but we gave them too much of a start. We gave Berkshire too much of a start as well, so we were the masters of our own destiny. I said pre-game, that we were in control but ultimately we let that control go and you can’t rely on other results.
“Yet, having said that, I am proud of the boys; they do go out there to do their best.”
