DEVON missed out on progressing to the quarter-finals of the Jason Leonard Under-20 County Championships after losing 26-7 away at Berkshire.

The defeat was the Green and Whites first of the 2020 campaign, but Cornwall’s late comeback win against Gloucestershire meant Devon just missed out on a last eight place.

Devon never really got going in heavy rain at Rams RFC and struggled to handle Berkshire’s forwards.

The visitors went behind after just five minutes when lock Dylan Crick touched down for Berkshire and Jack Gapper converted.

The hosts doubled their lead on 30 minutes when flanker Max Buckland dived over from close range after a five-metre scrum.

Devon were struggling at the scrums and six minutes before half-time they had prop Callum Wood sin-binned.

However, the visitors defended well with 14 men and five minutes into the second half they got a try back when scrum-half Sam Fulthorpe crossed from close range after a great run by replacement Callum Davies. Harry Ottaway added the conversion and it looked like the visitors might get back into the game.

But on 53 minutes they gave Berkshire an easy score. They were penalised for a forward pass in their own 22 and the hosts attacked. Devon denied them one try by pushing them into touch but the referee pulled play back for a penalty close to the line and Berkshire opted for a scrum from which number eight Ollie Tack scored.

He then got another seven minutes later when a loose ball was kicked forward and he won the race to touch it down and make it 26-7.

Devon thought they had scored a second try on 70 minutes but the referee ruled they had been held up and Berkshire pushed the visitors off the resultant five-metre scrum.

In the final minute, Wood picked up a second yellow card – and therefore a red - for another technical offence at the scrum, which summed up Devon’s day in Reading.
