THERE was an impressive turnout for the Devon Under-18s assessment day at the Ashbury Hotel and Golf Club in Okehampton on Sunday.

Nearly 100 youngsters who had all been nominated by their clubs or schools spent the afternoon showing off their skills in drills and small-sided games.

The Devon coaches and selectors now have a tough job of trying to select a training squad and a side for next Sunday’s development game with Cornwall. They will then finalise another squad for the South West Festival games on November 30 and the weekend of December 14/15.

“We were pleased with the huge turnout,” said under-18 head coach Joel Caddy. “The players were all a credit to their clubs and schools.

“I would also like to thank Salcombe, Kingsbridge, Exeter University and OPM for the use of some kit.”

All players who attended the assessment day should receive an email this week. The squad for the Cornwall game will also be published on this website.

Last season five Devon U18 players earned South West honours, while two were also selected to tour Ireland with the England Counties U18 squad.
