Barnstaple maintain unbeaten run in Devon Senior Cup

21 Oct 2019 18:13 | Devon RFU

REIGNING champions Barnstaple maintained their winning run in this season’s Devon Senior Cup by edging out Exmouth 25-23 in a thrilling match at the Imperial Ground.

A late Kyran McManus penalty secured them their first victory at Exmouth in 10 years.

The game was nip-and-tuck all the way through and the lead changed hands six times.

Exmouth edged the first half 17-10 thanks to tries by full-back Sam Whitehead and an individual effort from Dave Bargent, with George Meadows converting both and kicking a penalty.

Barnstaple’s only try in the first half came from Will Topps, with McManus kicking the rest of their points.

The visitors hit back after the break to level the game for a third time before Exmouth went 20-17 ahead. Back came Barnstaple with a try from Ben Hilton to make it 22-20, but a long-range penalty put Exmouth back in front with time running out. However, a penalty five minutes from the end allowed McManus to seal the win for his side.

Kingsbridge top the standings in the Devon Intermediate Cup after beating Cullompton 52-27 in an entertaining clash at High House.

The hosts ended up out-scoring Cullompton eight tries to two.

Teignmouth are keeping up the pace with Kingsbridge after they ran in four tries to beat Tiverton 29-6 at Bitton Park on Saturday.

In the Devon Intermediate Shield, Paignton moved to the top of the standings after beating Exeter Athletic 34-5.

Paignton did the damage in the second half after only leading 5-0 at the break thanks to a Jordan Hodge try. But George Palk (2), Alex Jeffery and Matt Skeet added further touch-downs after the interval.

Torquay are just a point behind having played a game less after they overcame South Molton 20-13 at Unicorn Park.

Torquay were 17-3 up at half-time thanks to tries by Carl Turner and Craig Withers and the boot of Mawgan Penrice. But South Molton came back in the second period with a try by James Tapp and kicks from Ben Smart to secure a losing bonus point.

Topsham came from 27-5 down at the break to beat Tavistock 34-27 at Sandy Park in the other Intermediate Shield game at the weekend.

George Hillson scored a hat-trick for Tavistock in the first half to go with further tries from Sam Snell and Jack Easton. But Topsham got one back just before the break through Robin Edbrooke and after the interval Will Loughton bagged a hat-trick and Will House two for the visitors.
