PLYMOUTH Argaum welcomed a special visitor to Bickleigh Down on Sunday to help them get a new under-13 girls’ side going.

Former Wales international Non Evans MBE, who earned 87 caps and scored 489 points, including a record 64 tries, for her country was more than happy to give up her time to coach and offer tips to the new players.

She even brought some of her caps and international shirts to help inspire the newcomers to rugby.

Argaum secretary Stuart Quarterman said: “She drove down from Swansea and was more than happy to take the session.

“She’s achieved so much in life with rugby, weightlifting, wrestling judo and was even on the Gladiators.

“The girls were mesmerised and if some of her enthusiasm rubs off on them, then they will do very well.

“It was a really fun session, driven around belief and the ‘I can do it’ mind set.

“We were so privileged to have had someone of her calibre come to us.”

Argaum are the latest club in Devon to start offer rugby for girls.

The move came about after they were approached by a group of eight under-13s in the area who wanted to play rugby.

No other club in the north of Plymouth offers girls’ rugby so Argaum have decided to give it a go.

They have entered next week’s under-13 girls’ touch event at the Plant Earth Games.

“Having a girls’ team was always something in our development plan to provide more for the community,” said Quarterman. “But previously they had always been logistical problems.”

The main logistical problems had been their shower and changing room area, but they have spent this summer redeveloping those as part of the NatWest RugbyForce weekend.

Quarterman, though, said the main reason they have done it is the amount of girls who approached them.

“We have maybe had the odd person before but this time we were approached by a group of eight girls,” he said. “The fact that there is already a core of a team made it easier to say ‘yes’.

“We are just going to see if we can do this. We have already entered the Plant Earth Games and to be able to go there with a team would be an awesome achievement.”
