CLARA NIELSON became the latest Devon player to become a full international when she came on as a replacement in England’s 38-5 bonus-point win over the USA in the Women’s Rugby Super Series opener in San Diego.

Nielson, who played for Tavistock and North Tawton before going on to Exeter University and Bristol Bears, featured for England in the non-cap match against the Barbarians earlier this month and did enough to secure a place in the squad for the trip to California for the Super Series.

She joined Harlequins prop Chloe Edwards in making her debut against the USA on Friday.

“It’s thoroughly deserved for Clara and Chloe,” said England coach Simon Middleton. “You talk about players taking their opportunities and they epitomise that - they came in initially to support the squad and made a massive impression with the coaches, not just with their ability but just as much with their attitude.”

Nielson will now be eyeing her first start for England, who will now play Canada France and New Zealand in the series which goes on to July 14.
